27/11/2006 - Photo opportunity: Cumbrian schools achieve healthy status

Fourteen schools in Cumbria will be accredited as healthy schools in an awards ceremony at Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith on Wednesday (29 November).

Schools in the county work with the Cumbria Healthy Schools Team to develop health related activities in schools centred around personal, social and health education, healthy eating, physical activity, and emotional health and wellbeing.

Health initiatives are developed in a partnership between the county council and Cumbria Primary Care Trust. 

The schools being accredited as Healthy Schools on Wednesday are:

Appleby Primary School

Beckstone Primary School

Chapel Street Infants School

Cleator Moor Nursery School

Gilsland CE School

Ireleth St. Peter's CE School

Kirkbride Primary School

Longtown Primary School

Milnthorpe Primary School

Monkwray School

Newbridge House

St James' CE Infant School, Whitehaven

St Mark's CE School, nr Kendal

Victoria Junior School, Barrow 

Guests attending the ceremony innclude Moira Swann, Corporate Director – Children’s Services, and Claire Robson, Regional Healthy Schools Coordinator for the North West.

County councillor Philip Chapelgoer is cabinets spokesman for Children's Services. He said:

"Health in our young people is a very important issue, and the lessons learnt when they are at school will hopefully stand them in good stead in future years."
