A special community day for local people in the Moorclose area of Workington has been arranged this Saturday (2 December) by Cumbria County Council and the South Workington Neighbourhood Management team.
The community day, which is being held at Moorclose Community Workshops on Needham Drive from 10:00am to 3:00pm, will give people the chance to tell local agencies what improvements they would like to see in the area. There will also be a chance to visit displays, take part in a free prize draw and enjoy a host of different events.
As well as refreshments and activities for children, local police officers will be explaining more about Neighbourhood Watch and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service will be offering free home safety advice.
Representatives from Cumbria Sure Start will be available to talk about childcare in the area and Allerdale Borough Council’s dog warden will be on hand to ID–microchip ‘man’s best friend’.
There will also be an opportunity to clear out large unwanted household items like sofas and beds in a refuse lorry provided by the Allerdale Environmental Partnership. Vans will be on hand to help people transport large items from their homes to the refuse lorry.
People will also be able to arrange for old fridges, freezers and washing machines to be collected and disposed of at a later date.
Moorclose County Councillor Gerald Humes, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for people in Moorclose. Local people have to put up with problems like litter, crime, anti-social behaviour and local grot-spots.
"It's all about listening to what people have to say and then use that information to draw up a plan which will help to improve the quality of life in Moorclose & Westfield.
"Local authorities and other agencies will then be challenged to help deliver those improvements.
“The county council is already helping to improve the area by drawing up one of the first community travel plans in Cumbria.
"Money to the tune of £30,000 has already been earmarked this year to tackle some of the community’s priorities such as speeding traffic and parking.
"However there is a great deal more that needs be done in Moorclose and I urge everyone to come along on Saturday and get involved.”
