Snap happy start to 2007 for calendar photo winners

The winners of a photo competition for a charity calendar depicting life in Cumbria have been announced.

Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Life magazine have teamed up to make the 2007 calendar, which features photos taken by the general public in the county.

More than 200 entries were received for the calendar. A judging session by Cumbria County Council Chairman Allan Caine and Cumbria Life Business Development Manager Mandy Norwood named the following 12 winning submissions: Neil Maughan (2), Ted Jackson, Katie Gaston, Rafael Cobos (2), Melvyn Lowther, Tony Royle, J R Turner, Susan McNeil, John Wright and D Abbott.

The calendars are being sold for £5 each and will be available at libraries and county offices across Cumbria and Cumbrian Newspaper Group offices in Carlisle, Workington and Whitehaven from Friday (18 October). It will also be sold at Tourist Information Centres and online at www.cumbrialife.co.uk

Profits will go to the Alzheimer’s Society and Cumbria Air Ambulance appeal, causes nominated by the Chairman. Councillor Caine said: "People who buy this calendar are not only contributing to very worthy causes, but are also supporting their county. This year's entries were outstanding and it was a very difficult task picking out the cream of the crop."

Cumbria Life's Mandy Norwood said: "Cumbria Life magazine reflects the beauty, tranquility and excitement of life in Cumbria and this new 2007 calendar with its range of local scenes will complete the picture all year round."
