5/4/2007 - Barrow residents urged to beware bogus callers

After a spate of incidents involving bogus callers targeting the elderly in the Barrow-in-Furness area, Cumbria Trading Standards are reminding everyone to be extremely wary when dealing with 'cold' callers at their house.

Phil Ashcroft, head of Cumbria Trading Standards, said:

"It's that time of year when bogus traders visit a specific area and then stay for a week or two before moving on.

"They knock on doors and offer to do such things as house repairs, tarmac driveways, or garden work.

"I would urge householders never to employ people who use these tactics.

"They may also pretend to be from the 'water board', checking on your water quality."

The warning from the county council's Trading Standards follows information they have received that bogus callers have now set up temporarily in Barrow.
