23/4/2007 - Libraries delve into Allerdale's past

History enthusiasts in Allerdale will be able to find out more about their heritage at a series of events to mark Local History Month in May.

A host of activities organised by Cumbria County Council at libraries next month, reflect the growing interest in local and family history.

Throughout the month, several libraries will be displaying photos from days gone by, where local people can pop in and see if they can identify a relative, building or landmark. 

Maryport and Cockermouth libraries will be offering family history hunters free taster sessions on a new library internet service - Ancestry.co.uk - with the chance to uncover valuable facts about their forebears' lives and times.

On Wednesday 2 May, Maryport library will be hosting a talk by John Crouch on the diary of William Bowie who lived in the town at the beginning of the 20th Century.

At Workington library on Wednesday 16 May, Trevor Jones will be giving a talk entitled 'Through a glass darkly - aspects of local history'.

Keswick library will be holding a special quiz on historical plaques in the town and on Friday 25 May, is holding a day of talks by local historians.

A number of libraries are also producing local history folders with the help of schoolchildren and older people in residential homes.

Councillor Roger Bingham, cabinet member responsible for Library Services in Cumbria, said: "Allerdale's libraries are putting on an array of interesting events for Local History Month.

"This is a great opportunity for library users to learn more about the history of their local community."
