7/8/2007 - Grange library offers young readers a healthy stitch in time

An innovative Cumbria County Council reading initiative is helping to stitch together generational links in Grange-over-Sands.

Resident's in the seaside town's Yewbarrow Lodge sheltered housing complex have used using their knitting and craft skills to create a special 'story sack' which is helping to turn a new generation on to the joys of reading.

The story sack created by the Yewbarrow Lodge craft group is a complete story in a bag and comes with a colourful book and a variety of knitted characters and other visual aids to help stimulate young children's reading skills.

The Grange story sack has a 'healthy living' theme and includes knitted fruit and felt sandwiches. The sack itself is embroidered with appliqué fruit.

Councillor Roger Bingham, cabinet member responsible for Cumbria's Library Service, said: ""Story sacks have proven very popular with younger children across the county and I am delighted that this initiaitve in Grange helping to bridge the generational gap."
