Cumbria County Council's Trading Standards officers are reminding the public to be wary of businesses that visit homes trying to sell security equipment.
Phil Ashcroft, Head of Cumbria Trading Standards, said: "We have had a number of complaints from elderly residents in Cumbria who have been contacted by a company selling security equipment.
"My advice is not to let these people into your house. The company's representative implies they are working with the approval of the Police or Neighbourhood Watch. This is not the case."
Trading Standards are currently investigating these claims.
The sales tactic used sees the householder receive a call from the company saying that they are in the area and that they will carry out a security survey.
Trading Standards advice is clear. Do not do business with cold callers. The Police, Fire & Rescue Service and Adult Social Care departnment are happy to give free independent advice to older people on the fitting and use of security equipment and panic buttons.
