The county council's director of Children's Services is today (Thursday 16 August) congratulating students and teachers on this year's A level results, which have shown continued improvements in Cumbria.
Results from 21 secondary schools in the county show the following initial findings. It must be stressed, however, that these are not final results for the county and are subject to revision as there are a total of 26 local authority secondary schools in Cumbria teaching A levels.
- The percentage of A-C grades has increased from 65.3% in 2005/6 to 67% in 2006/7 - this is below the 2006/7 national average of 72.8%.
- The percentage of A-E grades has increased from 94.8% in 2005/6 to 95.7% in 2006/7 - this is below the 2006/7 national average of 96.9%.
15 secondary schools in the county have also provided the average points score for their pupils. This is calculated by giving 270 points for an A grade, 240 for a B, 210 for a C, 180 for a D and 150 for a E and then creating a total score and also an average grade score per pupil.
- The average total points per student is up from 722 in 2005/6 to 755 in 2006/7. The national average in 2005/6 was 722, but no national figures are available yet for this year.
- The average grade score for all exam entrants is also up from 199.5 in 2005/6 to 203 in 2006/7. The national average in 2005/6 was 206.
Moira Swann, who heads up education and children's social care services at Cumbria County Council said:
"The early indications are that Cumbria's sixth formers are going from strength to strength. The number of pupils getting A to C grades looks to have gone up, as has the overall score for the number of A-levels they're passing. I'd like send my congratulations to all the students and schools who've given us their results so far.
"A-level students in this county have shown a sustained improvement over the last five years and we're keeping pace with national figures. Hopefully the new University of Cumbria will give an added incentive for students to work hard and go on to greater things in further education."
