21/8/2007 - Cumbrian Cup comes to Penrith

Penrith has been chosen to host Cumbria's second annual sporting festival for people with learning disabilities.

Organised by Cumbria County Council, this year's 'Cumbrian Cup' will see more than 200 people descend on Penrith Leisure Centre on Thursday 30 August for a sporting celebration.

Print and broadcast media are invited to attend any part of the event which gets underway at 11:00am and finished at 3:00pm with a special awards ceremony.

During the day, teams from across the county will take part in Big Bat Rounders and Flat Mat Bowls - two sports which enable the participation of a diverse range of people including those with more complex learning disabilities.

Councillor Oliver Pearson, Cabinet member responsible for Adult Social Care and Health, said: "This is the Cumbrian Cup's second year and we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring the games to Penrith.

"The event is a great way of promoting people's abilities and recognising the contribution people with learning disabilities can make to their local communities."
