28/8/2007 - Council offers help to calm first day jitters

Thousands of Cumbrian pupils starting secondary school for the first time will be receiving a handy magazine packed full of advice and information to help them calm their nerves and look forward to the new term which starts on 4 September.

'Moving On' magazine has been produced by Cumbria County Council's Children's Information Service and has been sent to nearly 6,000 pupils entering Year 7 next week.

The magazine interviews prospective parents and pupils to discuss their worries and concerns as well as revisiting last year's interviewees to see how their first year has been.

As well as advice on getting to school, there is information on how to keep safe online, the importance of school attendance, a 'survival guide' and a problem page which covers everything from bullying to exam stress.

Councillor Philip Chappelhow, Cabinet member responsible for Children's Services, said: "We all remember what it's like to start secondary school for the first time. Everything is different and it often takes pupils some time just to find their bearings. This magazine is packed full of great advice on how to make those first few weeks at secondary school a little bit easier and hopefully set pupils on the road to a fulfilling next chapter in their education."
