21/12/2007 - Torver to Coniston Road closure

Cumbria County Council is to spend £100,000 resurfacing more than one kilometre of the A593 between Torver and Coniston.

The work, starting on January 14th and set to last up to ten days depending on the weather, is the final stage in a programme of work carried out between Torver and Broughton.

This stage has been programmed last because it involves the longest official diversion and is potentially the most disruptive.

Local people may know routes around the closure, which will last from 9am to 5pm, but official diversions must, by law, only send traffic along roads similar to the one that has been closed to make sure that drivers of big vehicles like buses and lorries don’t get stuck or do damage driving on unsuitable minor roads.

The official diversion therefore sends drivers right around Grizedale Forest through Coniston, Clappersgate, Ambleside, Windermere, Greenodd, Lowick and Blawith.

Special measures have been taken to allow school buses through and emergency vehicles will be able to pass if necessary.

The road closure is unavoidable but every step has been taken to minimise disruption.
