11/12/2007 - Local committee puts money into speed gun for parishes

Eden local committee is to help fund a speed gun for parish councils to use to monitor traffic speeds in villages.

At its meeting this week (Monday 10 December), the committee agreed a proposal to put £1000 into the funding of a speed gun for use by parish councils in the area. The local CRASH (Casualty Reduction and Safer Highways) Group will also be looking at putting some funding into the scheme at its next meeting later this month.

The proposal follows the sucess of parish councils who have had access for a period of time to such speed guns. However, because of the the number of parish council areas in Eden, it was agreed that it would be a good use of local committee resources to buy equipment that could then be made available on a rota basis to all Eden parish councils.

Councillor Philip Chappelhow is chair of Eden local committee. He said:

"By having a speed gun as a resource that everyone can call on, it means that one parish or community doesn't need to go to the not inconsiderable expense of buying equipment which eventually - hopefully - they will have less and less need for.

"It is also a way of getting local people directly involved in dealing with the issues in their area, giving them greater 'ownership' of the solutions."
