8/2/2007 - Royal recognition for Wigton firefighters

Wigton firefighters who helped tackle a blaze at one of the Prince of Wales' favourite pubs have received Royal recognition.

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service's Andrew Sedgwick and Stephen Ward were invited to meet Prince Charles yesterday (5 Februrary) during his visit to The Crown in Hesket Newmarket where the day before they had helped put out a fire in the pub's chimney.

Commenting after the Prince's visit, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service's Group Manager John McVay said:

"The Prince's private secretary got in touch after the fire, to invite members of the Wigton crew to come along and talk to the Prince about their actions.

"It was a very thoughtful gesture and a great opportunity for the firefighters involved to talk to the Prince about the work of the county's Fire and Rescue Service."
