27/2/2007 - Views sought on draft scrutiny report

Cumbria's Health and Well-being Scrutiny Committee is to present its interim findings into how older people with complex needs are being dealt with in the county.

Service users, carers and front-line staff who took part in the Scrutiny Committee's seven months of evidence gathering are being invited to a special meeting in Whitehaven on Wednesday (28 February) where they will be asked to comment on the committee's draft recomendations.

The event will be chaired by Copeland District Councillor Anne Bradshaw, who is also a member of the Health and Well-being Scrutiny Committee.

Last year, the committee was successful in securing £10,000 from the Centre for Public Scrutiny to support the review which began in July.

Since then, the scrutiny has been looking at range of different issues concerning the care of older people with complex needs and its interim findings are expected to include a number of draft recommendations including:

- The development of a plan to reduce the number of older people requiring hospital admission;

- More promotion of Direct Payments which service users can use to purchase support directly from providers;

- Closer working between Adult Social Care and the NHS, which the committee believes will benefit from the recent creation of Cumbria's new Health and Well-being Board.

The Scrutiny of Joint Care Management of Older People with Complex Needs event will take place at Whitehaven Civic Hall. The programme is as follows:
