10/7/2007 - Major road resurfacing in Aspatria

Two important schemes will see major road resurfacing work in Aspatria in the coming weeks.

Queen Street in Aspatria will be closed to all traffic on Sunday, July 15th, for essential resurfacing work to a depth of 40mm.

Cumbria Highways crews will be putting down a new surface along 135 metres of the A596 Queen Street in a project costing £23,000.

The road will need to be closed A596 between Brayton Road and Brough Street. Diversions will be in place. Access to Harriston Road will be maintained as and when work allows.

Residents nearby have been informed by letter and have motorists have been given advance notice of the works by boards placed along the affected route.

The diversion route is via Thursby Roundabout, Down to Belle Vue Roundabout in Cockermouth along to Maryport on the A594 and then back up the A596 to Aspatria. HGV's travelling to Workington will be diverted onto the A66 from Belle Vue Roundabout. The diversion is reversed for traffic coming the other way.

Then, starting on July 23rd, a five and a half week project will spend £140,000 reconstructing around 650 metres of carriageway to a depth of 140mm.

This work will take part in three phases while separate sections of road will need to be closed.

Phase one will see the closure of the B5301 Station Road from its junction with the A596 King Street to the Rugby Club.

Phase two will see the closure of the B5301 from the Rugby Club to Aspatria Farmers (formerly Hillarys Agricultural Engineers).

Phase three will see the closure of the B5301 from Aspatria Farmers to the unadopted road known as Comely Bank.

The road will need to be closed but access for pedestrians will be maintained at all times and vehicle access will be maintained where possible Signposted diversions will be in place.

The diversions are:

Southbound: From the junction of Station Road follow King Street east to the B5299 Brayton Road. Turn right and follow the B5299 to the A595 at Mealsgate. Turn right and follow the A595 to the B5301at Moota and turn right onto the B5301 for Aspatria.

The diversion is reversed for northbound traffic.
