A major scheme to resurface Brampton Road in the Stanwix area of Carlisle will get underway on Monday, July 23rd.
The £400,000 scheme will see 600 metres of carriageway and footway resurfaced between the A7 Stanwix Bank and Cumbria Institute of the Arts over the next four weeks.
Crews from Cumbria Highways will work seven days a week in order to finish the job as quickly as possible. For most of the time, manually-operated temporary traffic lights will be used to control traffic while the road is reduced to one carriageway.
However, a number of short term road closures and diversions will be required to complete the job.
Work is divided into three phases:
Phase one will start at 08:00hrs on Monday, 23rd July and extends from the Cumbria Institute of the Arts entrance for a distance of 230 metres past Well Lane junction. This phase will involve the closure of Well Lane and Rickerby Park junctions and should be complete by 3rd August.
Phase two involves the closure of Brampton Road at the junction with the A7 at Stanwix Bank for a distance of 120 metres between 18:00hrs on Friday, 3rd August, until 05:00hrs on Monday, 6th August, 2007.
Phase three starts at 08:00hrs on 6th August and links phases one and two with a length of 250 metres and requires the closure of Church Lane junction.
Diversion routes will be signed and extensive advance warning signing is already in place to inform motorists.
Residents in the area immediately affected will be receiving details of the scheme by letter before work starts.
The scheme has been programmed specifically to happen during the holiday period for the college and for schools and to start after the Cumberland Show on the weekend of July 21st.
It has, as far as possible, been co-ordinated to avoid conflict with city-wide work being carried out by United Utilities and other utilities companies on major routes into town.
The timing of traffic lights at key points on the A7 Scotland Road and Kingstown Road will be adjusted to take account of changes in traffic flow.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and use the alternative routes of the A689 and A7.
