31/7/2007 - Councillors agree roadmap for Allerdale travel improvements

A raft of schemes to improve transport and travel in seven Allerdale communities has today been agreed by the area's local county council committee.

Some of the improvements will be carried out during this financial year while others will be funded out of future financial settlements.

* Among the early improvements people can expect to see before the end of this year are:

* Traffic calming measures in Thornthwaite village;

* A new footpath in near Ryehill Farm in Flimby;

* The redevelopment of the old railway line in Harrington to provide access to the town's school;

* A new pedestrian crossing on Hylton Terrace in Silloth;

* A new bus facility in Workington's Derwent Howe and improvements to the junction at Stanbeck Meadows in the town;

The improvements form part of six community Travel Plans which local people in St. Michael's, St. John's, Flimby, Harrington, Silloth and Above Derwent, have helped highways engineers create over the course of several public meetings.

Community travel plans look at local travel needs for people living and working in communities for now and in the future.

Residents and local community groups can have their say about local travel and transport issues and work towards reducing the impact of travel on their quality of life. The plans look at all aspects of travel, including walking, cycling, public transport and the safe use of cars.

Councillor Gerald Humes, Chairman of the county council's Local Committee for Allerdale, said: "The committee is pleased to be able to support these latest Community Travel Plans.

"Each plan reflects the travel priorities expressed by local people and will form a roadmap for highways engineers to plan further improvements as funding allows."
