11/6/2007 - Carlisle library quenches city's thirst for the past

A slew of new local history talks are being organised by Carlisle Library following the sell-out success of events organised by the library in May to mark this year's Local History Month.

The illustrated talks at the library on the history of local landmarks like Carlisle canal and the county gaol proved such a big hit with the public last month that a new programme of talks has been arranged for July.

History-hunters can now book tickets to hear the following talks by local historian Denis Perriam on the Border City's long and illustrious past between 12:30pm and 1:10pm at Carlisle Library: Botchergate (part one) on Thursday 5 July; Botchergate (part two) on Thursday 12 July; By Dandy to Port Carlisle and Port Carlisle Railway on Thursday 19 July; and Stanwix on Thursday 26 July.

Tickets for each talk cost £1.00 and can be purchased from the city's library. People interested in delving into Carlisle's past are urged to book early to avoid disappointment.

Councillor Roger Bingham, cabinet member responsible for Library Services in Cumbria, said: "Last month's illustrated history talks were a huge success with all four events sold-out.

"There is clearly a real hunger for information on Carlisle's past and in response to that, the county council's Library Service has organised another programme of interesting talks to help people learn more about the history of their community."
