The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is launching Child Safety Week with support from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service.

The awareness-raising event runs from 18 - 24 June.

Fire and Rescue Service community safety manager Brian Steadman, said: "Children are a vulnerable group when it comes to risk from fire.

"According to the most recent fire statistics, every day around 300 children are admitted to hospital because of their injuries.

"That's over 100,000 children every year. Many children are left scarred for life and many are permanently disabled.

"Unfortunately too many of us in the Fire and Rescue Service have been to incidents involving young people and the worst tragedy of all is that many of these deaths and injuries are preventable."

"Child Safety Week is an excellent time for us to focus our message on children and those who care for them.

"Simple steps can be taken to greatly reduce the risk."

· Never leave matches or cigarette lighters where children can find them. Children as young as three have started fires that have killed them and their families.

· Make an escape plan for your home.

· Ensure you have working smoke alarms fitted in your home and children know what they have to do when the alarm operates.

· Never be tempted to leave a child unattended in the home. If you are going out get in a reliable friend, relation or neighbour who will keep them safe and know what to do in the event of fire.

· If a child is in the room always place a fireguard around the fire.
