20/6/2007 - Summer cash boost for Allerdale community organisations

Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Allerdale has today granted two community organisations more than £3,700 for summer projects.

Workington Tennis Club has been given £1,210 to help set up summer coaching sessions for schoolchildren to take part in over the summer holiday. The money will go towards additional tennis equipment, coaching and trophies for a special in-house tournament. Around 60 local children aged 14 and under are expected to benefit from the project.

Allerdale's Still Life Parkinsons Art Therapy Group have been allocated £2,500 to help set up a special exhibition of their artwork in House of Commons. The exhibition, which takes place in the hallowed corridors of Westminster from 23 to 27 July, is being held to highlight the needs of Parkinsons sufferers in West Cumbria.

The money will be used to help finance the transport of paintings to London and accommodation for 10 members of the group.

Councillor Gerald Humes, chairman of the county council's Local Committee for Allerdale, said: "We are delighted to be able to support these two local organisations organise a series of rewarding events over the summer."
