Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Copeland has today given £1,500 for a project by Haverigg schoolchildren to brighten up the village.
Haverigg Primary school pupils want to replace a modern grey lamppost on the roundabout opposite The Harbour Hotel with a stylish Victorian lamp.
The scheme also includes the installation of a new three decorative lanterns, weeding and pointing of kerbs and the word 'welcome spelled out in decorative bricks on the traffic island where the lamp sits.
In May, a group of children from the school put their idea to councillors at their meeting in Cleator Moor. Now the committee has delivered a big cash boost to the project which schoolchildren hope will improve the look of the area in Haverigg known locally as 'Big Lamp'.
Cumbria County Council's highways partners have already indicated their willingness to consider doing their share of work free of charge.
Following today's decision, county councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chairman of the Local Committee for Copeland said: "What Haverigg schoolchildren are doing for their village is fantastic and the committee is delighted to be able to help them achieve their goal.
"This has also been a wonderful educational experience for all the pupils involved.
"The word 'partnership' is often bandied around in local government. In this case it is an apt description to describe the way the school, its pupils, local councillors and Cumbria Highways have worked together to help get this project off the ground."
