22/6/2007 - Yewdale pre-school gets cash from council committee

A cheque for £2,500 will be handed over to Yewdale Community Centre's pre-school nursery next Tuesday (26 June), courtesy of the county council's local committee for Carlisle.

Children who use the centre, along with playleader Margaret Walker, will receive the cheque from the local area committee's vice chair, and Yewdale county councillor, Helen Horne.

The money will go towards ICT equipment, story sacks and books for children, parents and staff.

The pre-school nursery has been registered since 1997; as well as inside facilities it also has access to a playing field and an enclosed adventure playground.

Over the last 12 months, Cumbria County Council's local committee for Carlisle has awarded over £85,000 in early years grants. Vice Chair Helen Horne said:

"It is very rewarding to be able to give so much support to community organisations in and around Carlisle.

"I am particulary delighted at being able to support the local nursery in my ward. It is a vibrant, thriving nursery providing an excellent service for families.

"Days like today enable us to see up close the people we are helping with these funds."

Yewdale pre-school playleader Margaret Walker said:

"I am absolutely thrilled with the grant from Carlisle local committee. The grant has funded computers, digital cameras and paint. This will really help to devlop the children's language and communication skills.

"We couldn't have done it without this grant."
