22/6/2007 - Public display on changes to A590 in Barrow

Details and drawings of the £2.4 million scheme to improve the A590 in Barrow will go on display at the Nan Tait Centre in the Conference Room on Monday, June 25th.

Staff will be on-hand to discuss the scheme between 11am and 4pm on the 25th and the display will remain open to the public at the Nan Tait until June 29th. 

A leaflet outlining the scheme due to start in mid-August will be available at Barrow Town Hall and Barrow Library. The leaflet (attached) is also being sent to households most directly affected by the changes.

The scheme will see improvements to the traffic system, environmental enhancements and shared cycle and pedestrian footways and in the area.

Changes include:

Walney Road becomes one-way southbound from Ironworks Road to Craven Park Roundabout.

Ironworks Road becomes one way northbound from North Road to Walney Road.

North Road (between Craven Park Roundabout and Ironworks Road) and Ashburner Way will remain two-way.

New traffic signals and pedestrian crossings will be introduced at junctions:

Walney Road / Ironworks Road

Walney Road / Duke Street

Walney Road / Ashburner Way

Ironworks Road / Ashburner Way

North Road / Ironworks Road.

Improvements at Craven park Roundabout.

73 high quality new lighting columns.

Public art

Ground cover and tree planting.

The scheme, paid for by West Lakes Renaissance and Cumbria County Council, will start in mid August and work is expected to last for 16 weeks. A contractor for the work will be appointed in the next month.
