A group of young people will have their achievements recognised next week after completing Carlisle fire station's 'Young Firefighters' scheme.
The innovative scheme helps young people from Carlisle to build their self-confidence and improve teamwork and communication by training them in basic fire and rescue service skills like first aid and rudimentary fire fighting.
Photographers are invited to attend the passing out parade at the station on Rickergate from 12:15pm on Monday 2 July where family, friends and instructors will watch the scheme's successful Young Firefighters perform hose drills and other exercises before being presented with certificates of achievement by Cumbria's Chief Fire Officer Dominic Harrison.
Firefighters are seen as positive role models and the Young Firefighters scheme is helping crews to forge closer links with young people who may underachieve at school or struggle with social problems.
The nine young people, who have attended the course over the last twelve weeks, were nominated for the scheme by Morton School and Caldew School who thought they would benefit from the training which is provided by serving firefighters.
One Young Firefighter, James Brown from Trinity School, attended the course last year and the positive impact it had upon him led to his return this year as a volunteer instructor. James will be available for interview at the passing out parade where he will talk about his experience as a Young Firefighter.
