22/3/2007 - Parton footballers score county council cash-injection

Parton football club's goal of building modern changing rooms and community facilities at their Ramsey Drive ground has today received a cash boost from county councillors in Copeland.

Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Copeland today agreed to grant £5,000 to help the club secure capital funding from the Football Foundation for the scheme which is expected to cost £350,000.

In 2005, the ground's changing rooms were burned down by arsonists and since then, players have had to get changed in portacabin.

The club, which was founded more than 100 years ago, plans to build new changing rooms with showers and toilets. The modern facility will also include a kitchen area and clubroom that will be available for community use.

The money granted today will go towards a sum of around £40,000 which the club needs to raise before it can access more funding from the Football Foundation.

Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chairman of the Copeland Local Committee, said: "Grassroots football has an important role to play in bringing communities together.

"It can often be very difficult for groups to secure funding for projects that make a real difference in the local community and we hope this money will help Parton football club get the right result on this important scheme".
