14/5/2007 - Library Service takes the strain during Adult Learners' Week

Free massages and internet taster sessions are being laid-on for library goers to promote this year's Adult Learners' Week (19-25 May).

A professional masseuse will be offering stress-busting hand, foot or head massages at Penrith Library on 25 May as part of Cumbria County Council's drive to encourage more adults back into learning.

In addition to the hands-on approach in Penrith, other libraries will be offering free internet lessons and help on producing the perfect CV.

A number of branches will be using the week to promote family learning through special reading sessions for parents and carers with children aged five or younger.

The week will also see budding adult learners in several libraries getting the chance to road-test the new online Ancestory.co.uk service which provides access to name-indexed census, birth, marriage and death records from 1841 to 1901.

Councillor Roger Bingham, cabinet member responsible for Cumbria's Library Service, said: "Cumbria County Council's libraries have put on a host of innovative events which will hopefully inspire more people to see what learning could do for them.

"Every year Adult Learners' Week offers thousands of people the chance to catch up on skills they may have missed out on in the past."

The events in the county's libraries are just part of the activities organised by Cumbria County Council for Adult Learners' Week. People can more information on events taking place in their area on the county council's website www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/events
