30/5/2007 - Community info at a click

People in Cumbria can now find out more about where they live thanks to a new online initiative launched by Cumbria County Council.

Detailed profiles of local communities can now be viewed on the county council's website by following the link provided at the foot of this page.

168 wards in all six districts in the county are profiled.

The ward profiles pull together information from a wide range of sources including data from the 2001 Census, Indices of Multiple Deprivation, GCSE results and Lifestyle and Income data (CACI 2006). It provides the most comprehensive and factual snapshot of local communities ever seen in the county.

People can now see at a glance how their community is made up in terms of:

- Age
- Ethnicity
- Population density
- Healthiness
- Religion
- Qualifications and educational standards
- Housing types
- Family incomes
- Crime rates
- Disability rates
- Unemployment

They can even find out the average number of cars owned per household, how people get to work and the proportion of single parents. There is also data on the number of people falling into different social categories outlined by the market research specialists CACI such as 'Affluent Greys', 'Flourishing Families' and 'Aspiring Singles'.

Councillor Elizabeth Mallinson, cabinet member responsible for organisational development, said:

"Information about local communities is critical in gaining an understanding of the true needs of the people of Cumbria. Bringing all the various strands together to provide a snapshot of the communities makes fascinating reading and will also help us shape our services for the future."
