30/5/2007 - Neighbourhood Forum helps Distington garden grow

A Distington garden project is blooming thanks to help from Cumbria County Council's Neighbourhood Forum for North West Copeland.

For more than two years, gardeners at the Distington Walled Garden project have been without a proper greenhouse since heavy storms destroyed their old one in 2005.

Now, thanks to financial support from the Neighbourhood Forum, The Hub, and the Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities Fund, a brand new £23,000 greenhouse is set to be unveiled.

Photographers are invited to join Copeland Mayor Anne Faichney, Distington and Moresby county councillor Cam Ross, and other local dignitaries for the official opening of the new greenhouse at the Giligarran Road gardens on Tuesday 5 June, at 2:00pm.

The Distington Walled Garden is a community enterprise, providing nationally recognised horticultural training. The garden grows fresh produce and plants which are sold locally.

Commenting, councillor Cam Ross said: "The replacement of the garden's storm-damaged greenhouse means the project can continue to blossom.

"The opening of this new greenhouse coincides fittingly with World Environment Day.

"The Distington Walled Garden has been operating for six years and has a real track record inhelping people to grow."
