1/11/2007 - Cumbrian schools stay healthy - TODAY: Thursday 1 November

Nearly 30 schools from across the county will be reaccredited as healthy schools in an awards ceremony at Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith today (Thursday 1 November).

The county's schools work with the Cumbria Healthy Schools Team to develop health related activities that are centred around social and health education, healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing.

The health initiatives are developed in a partnership between Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Primary Care Trust.

All of the schools receiving awards have been previously accredited as healthy schools. However, new Government guidelines mean that the schools need to be reaccredited. They will now hold that status until 2010.

Pupils, staff, governors and the county's healthy schools co-ordinators will all be at the presentation, from 1.30pm - 6.30pm.

The schools receiving plaques at Rheged today are:

Beetham CE School, Brough School, Brook Street, Dowdales, Eaglesfield Paddle, Greengate Junior School, Leven Valley CE School, Newbarns, Ormsgill, Ravenstonedale Endowed School, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Threlkeld CE Primary School, Victoria Infants, William Howard, Yewdale School, Lakes School, Beaconside CE Junior School, Borrowdale CE Primary School, Caldew School, Castle Carrock School, Crosscrake CE, Distington Community School, North Lakes School, Petteril Bank, Wyndham

Other schools that have been reaccredited but are unable to attend the ceremony are:

Flookbugh CE School, Dean CE School, Houghton CE School, Plumpton School, Ullswater Community College

Jim Buchanan is Cumbria County Council's cabinet member for Children's Wellbeing. He said:

"This is a great achievement, and I would like to congratulate all the schools involved. That they have been judged healthy for a second time demonstrates the hard work that they, and the Healthy Schools team, have put in.

"Health in our young people is a very important issue - not just school meals, but throughout the school and beyond the school gates as well - and learning good lessons at this age will hopefully stand them in good stead for future years."
