6/11/2007 - Cumbria to host major public health conference

Tackling health inequalities and empowering people in Cumbria to take control of their well-being is to be the focus of the county’s first-ever Healthy Living Works for All conference later this week.

The day-long summit at Penrith's North Lakes Hotel on Thursday 8 November will see some of Cumbria’s leading experts set out how public organisations are joining forces to make Cumbria a healthier place.

Organised by Cumbria County Council’s Adult Social Care directorate, the conference will hear how different public organisations are already working together to create the conditions for healthy living.

Delegates will hear about Well Read –Cumbria’s first Books on Prescription scheme for people with mental health problems which is being delivered jointly by the county council’s Library Service and Cumbria’s community mental health teams.

Cumbria’s director of public health, John Ashton and the county council’s director of Adult Social Care & Health, Jill Stannard will both be attending the event alongside a host of other delegates.

Speaking ahead of the event, Councillor Oliver Pearson, cabinet member responsible for Adult Social Care & Health at Cumbria County Council, said: "The county council, working with its partners, has a massive opportunity to help improve the health and well-being of the 15,000 adults it currently provides care for and the county's 75,000 schoolchildren.

"Empowering people to take charge of their own well-being is the key to reducing health inequalities in Cumbria. That can only be done through organisations like the county council, the health service and other partners coming together to provide an all encompassing approach to public health."
