23/11/2007 - 11 MILLION Takeover Day takes over at Cumbria Outdoors - Friday 23 November

Children from Fairfield Junior School in Cockermouth will be taking over the roles of staff at Cumbria Outdoors at Hawes End near Keswick this Friday (23 November), as part of 11 MILLION Takeover Day.

The day provides a chance for the 11 million children and young people in England to 'take over' businesses and organisations and a recognition of the role they have to play in decision-making.

Part of Cumbria County Council's Children's Services, Cumbria Outdoors provides for young people to step out of their familiar environment and gives them a chance to experience new and exciting challenges, such as dinghy sailing, abseiling, canoe rafting, fishing, archery, and team building and problem solving activities.

The 14 children from Fairfield will have an opportunity to see how Cumbria Outdoors is run, and gain skills, knowledge and a better understanding of what goes on 'behind the scenes' when young people visit. They will also get leadership experience, and have a say in decisions that need to be taken.

The 11 MILLION experience will be as real as possible for the youngsters, as they take over answering the phone, making bookings and developing programmes for future visits.

They will also be choosing healthy eating menus, preparing activities and doing risk assessments.

At the end of the day the children will take part in a feedback session which will include their ideas for any changes they think would benefit the organisation.

Lesley Hill, Client Services Manager at Cumbria Outdoors, said:

"11 MILLION Takeover Day is a chance for the 11 million children and young people in England to take over from adults in businesses and organisations.

"It's a great way to celebrate the importance of young people in society, and to demonstrate a commitment to listening and recognising the talents and contributions they make.

"It's also a good way of us contributing, along with the county council, to the Government's 'Every Child Matters' initiative - making sure children and young people can have a good life, whoever they are and no matter what problems they may face."
