9/10/2007 - Libraries challenge county's 'web-phobes'

This Friday (12 October) is national Get Online Day and a number of Cumbria County Council libraries are using the occasion to help people take the internet plunge.

Several libraries have arranged free internet taster-sessions where people can come along and get some expert tuition from trained library staff.

All the county council's libraries offer high-speed internet access. Parents whose children use the service also have the extra piece of mind of knowing that strict filters are in place to block inappropriate content and use.

Internet access in the county's libraries normally costs £1 for an hour's surfing and 50p for 15 minutes - ideal for people who just want to check their emails.

Helen Towers from Cumbria Library Service, said: "The internet can look really scary, but once people take the take the plunge, they never look back.

"I hope people who haven't tried the internet before will use Get Online Day to pop into one of the libraries taking part and have a go for free."

For more information on the internet services available through Cumbria's libraries, people can visit the county council's website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries.
