15/10/2007 - Primary pupils eat well for a healthy future

Primary school kitchens across Cumbria will be dishing up a special themed lunch next week (15 - 19 October) to mark National School Meals Week 2007.

An annual event, National School Meals Week aims to create a positive link between the classroom and school meals, and to promote a healthy lifestyle that combines a balanced diet with increased physical activity. Schools that use the county council's school meals service are taking part in the week.

The theme this year is 'eat well for a healthy and happy future', and every child who stays for school lunch on the chosen day next week will receive a 'Kid's Kitchen' sticker.

The menu for the day features fresh produce, with plenty of vegetables, a fruit based pudding and locally supplied beef.

The children will be sitting down to:

- roast beef and Yorkshire pudding

- roast potatoes

- roast parsnips and carrot batons

-gravy

OR

- broccoli and cauliflower gratin

- roast potatoes

- roast parsnips and carrot batons

Dessert is Eve's pudding and custard

Jim Buchanan is the county council's cabinet member for Children's Wellbeing. He said:

"It's been scientifically proven that a balanced diet helps children to concentrate better, which results in them being able to perform better at school.

"The schools that are taking the county council's school meals service are making sure that their children are getting a healthy meal in the middle of the day - and the 'fun' element makes eating healthily even more appealing."
