22/10/2007 - Firework safety talks for Barrow schoolchildren

Schoolchildren from all over Barrow will be getting the low-down on firework and bonfire safety in the run up to this year's November 5th celebrations.

Firefighters and community safety officers will be visiting schools to talk to Year 5 and 6 pupils about the dangers of neglecting firework safety.

More than 1,200 schoolchildren are expected to receive the no-nonsense message not to fool with fireworks as Bonfire Night draws closer.

The presentations will cover general safety, firework legislation and the action that can be taken against anyone caught using fireworks illegally.

Jennifer Petcher, Community Safety coordinator for Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, said: "These visits are being arranged so that our staff can meet face-to-face with the young people and to highlight the potential dangers of fireworks and bonfires.

"By getting across the important message not to fool with fireworks, we can hopefully help make the time around this year's Bonfire Night enjoyable and more importantly, a safe experience for everyone concerned."

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service carries out free home safety checks which include advice on the best escape route to take, checking the home for fire hazards and installing a free smoke alarm where required.
