24/10/2007 - Volunteers bag a big thanks

Children and adults who took part in a summer litter pick in Edenside will be recognised for their efforts tomorrow when they get to meet the Mayor of Carlisle.

The photo opportunity has been organised by Stanwix Urban Neighbourhood Forum, which co-ordinated the July 21st litter pick alongside Carlisle City Council Environmental Team and McDonalds, Kingstown.

Participants in the litter pick will meet the Mayor of Carlisle Liz Mallinson, who is also a county councillor and chair of the Stanwix Urban Neighbourhood Forum. Stanwix residents, Stanwix Youth Club members, Carlisle City Council Environmental Team representatives and representatives from McDonalds, Kingstown will all attend the event in the Mayor's Parlour, Civic Centre at 9.30am tomorrow (October 25th).

The litter pick was organised to clean up litter from the footpaths and the riverside area between the Cricket Club and Eden Place / Etterby Terrace. Over 10 big black binbags full of rubbish were collected by the team of helpers. Members of the Stanwix Youth Club helped out on the day by making cakes to sell from the Cricket Club, which helped raise funds for the Youth Club. Children taking part in the event were given free fruit and drink by McDonalds. It's hoped the litter pick will become a regular event in the area.

The litter pick was one of many measures the City Council has taken to encourage residents and visitors to keep Carlisle Cleaner, Greener and Safer. Local teenagers who keep Carlisle streets clean are also being rewarded with free tokens for local shops. Around 1,000 Rewards 4 U' tokens have been handed out so far.

The City Council launched a public awareness campaign - Carlisle...cleaner than ever - last year and enforcement officers have made frequent visits to the city centre to warn visitors of the new Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act legislation. They also visited schools, community events and Neighbourhood Forums to spread the word.

Cllr Liz Mallinson said:

"Keeping our environment clean and tidy is a vital job that everyone has to play a part in. Lots of people from the Stanwix area clubbed together to make this happen and it's important that we recognise their efforts."
