30/10/2007 - Reach for the peak with Cumbrian libraries

Cumbrian libraries are hitting the heights with the Kendal Mountain Book Festival again this year.

Kendal library will be opening its doors for the launch of Bill Birkett’s latest book Scafell: Portrait of a Mountain on Wednesday, 14 November at 7.30pm.

The popular local photographer, climber and writer will be sharing his intimate knowledge of the mountain by combining readings with a presentation of stunning images.

Tickets are available from the library at £5.50 including a glass of wine.

The following afternoon will see mountain enthusiasts treated to an audience with the legendary Doug Scott at Kendal library where he will be providing a rare insight into his writing and sources of inspiration.

An exhibition of Doug’s awe-inspiring photographs will also be featured in the library gallery for the duration of the festival.

Friday evening sees a major event at the Town Hall, held in association with Kendal library when Ed Douglas will be chairing a lively discussion in the company of Al Alvarez, Andy Cave and Greg Child.

Kendal Mountain Book Festival is also becoming an increasingly popular fixture in the calendar of local reading groups who are invited to discuss the works of visiting authors directly with the writers.

This year sees groups from Kendal, Ambleside, Milnthorpe, Grange, Barrow, Gosforth, Seascale and Penrith reading the works of Terry Gifford, Jeff Long, Joe Simpson and John Vaillant.
