A high-tech pedestrian crossing is to be installed on a busy road outside Whitehaven School.
Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Copeland has decided to spend £30,000 on the new crossing which will replace a Zebra Crossing that has been in place since 2001.
The puffin crossing, on Hensingham Road will work like a pelican crossing, but has sensors which detect large or slow-moving groups of people.
Using high-tech sensors, puffin crossings can detect if there are still pedestrians waiting to cross and extend the ‘green man time for a limited period accordingly.
Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chairman of the county council’s Local Committee for Copeland, said: "This stretch of road can get quite congested in the mornings.
"The new puffin crossing which make it much easier for pupils to cross Hensingham Road on their way to and from Whitehaven School."
The county council’s Highways department will now draw up plans for the new crossing which it is hoped will be in place by early next year.
