Cumbria County Council's South Lakeland Local Committee today (Tuesday 25th) awarded £7,000 worth of grants to local groups working in the community.
The charity Workbase will receive £3,000 from the local committee's Divisional Grants budget. Workbase helps people recovering from serious mental illness with a view to helping them return to employment, training or voluntary work.
Workbase approached the committee for funds to help it expand into new premises.
Cruse Bereavement Care received a grant of £2,000 to help towards their running costs. The organisation provides free bereavement advice and support in the county. In 2005/6 it helped 42 clients in South Lakeland giving them an average of six-and-a-half hours support each.
The local committee also agreed to provide £2,000 for the Walk the Way to Health initiative. This group aims to improve health and fitness, promote the health and social benefits of walking and offers free walks led by trained volunteers. They have plans to extend their scheme by developing links with more community groups to get more people involved and asked South Lakes Local Committee for a contribution towards running costs.
Committee chairman Ted Walsh said: "These are good causes that help many people in South Lakeland so we are glad to support them."
