1/8/2008 - Olympics fever hits Carlisle libraries this summer

Beijing won't be the only place holding Olympics events this summer - libraries in and around Carlisle will be hosting indoor olympics for children, along with robotics, cheerleading and war gaming.

The host of events taking place throughout August are a part of this year's Team Read challenge.

Organised in Cumbria by the county council’s Library Service, the Team Read challenge gives young library goers the chance to enjoy reading from a range of exiting new books as well as the usual favourites.

The Team Read is the tenth national Summer Reading Challenge - a massive reading promotion for 4-11 year olds which runs in libraries throughout the summer holidays, and which this year has a sporting theme.

Children are challenged to read six books, spurred on by free stickers and other incentives.

Children who sign up to take part receive a bright and colourful folder to record their summer reading in, and a hologram card.

Young people who complete the challenge will be presented with medals and certificates. They will also get a Team Read bag.

The libraries in Carlisle, Harrarby, Brampton, Longtown, Morton and Denton Holme are all taking part. The activities on offer are:

Indoor Olympics - team fun and games for ages 5+ Cheerleading - For children 6+ Robotics - build your own robot footballer (family tickets only) Games workshop - have a go at war gaming. Age 9+

To take part, and to check on the days and times the activities are happening, young people should visit their local library. Information on what's happening is also on the county council website http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/
