27/2/2008 - Dance yourself fitter

Cumbria County Council is offering a wide range of creative and physical movement classes across Allerdale and Copeland throughout 2008 to help people get fitter

The weekly sessions are led by Emma Rowbotham, Allerdale & Copeland’s community dance worker and are funded by Sport England, Allerdale Borough Council, Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria County Council, Arts Council North West, and Allerdale & Copeland School Sports Partnerships.

"We’re trying to engage more people in activity that will improve their health and well-being, bring them into contact with new friends and give them a creative hobby for life," said Lynn Fade, Cumbria County Council's dance coordinator.

Every Monday a new Mover’s ‘n’ Shakers session takes place at The Rosehill Theatre barn in Whitehaven between 1.30pm-2.30pm for toddlers aged 2-5 years-old and their parents/carers. The fun and creative movement session uses lots of colourful props and stories.

Also on Mondays is Boyz Moves, for junior boys 8-12 years, between 4.00pm and 5.00pm at the Rosehill Theatre. This is a street dance session for boys wishing to learn a few street-wise moves. The same class also takes place at Cockermouth Leisure Centre every Thursday between 4.00pm and 5.00pm.

Following on every Monday (at Rosehill) and Thursday (at Cockermouth Leisure Centre) between 5.00pm-6.15pm is a junior dance group for girls and boys aged 8-12 years. These groups are open to all levels and focus on learning about creative movement and choreographic vocabulary.

At 6.30-8.00pm, Copeland Youth Dance Company meet at The Rosehill Theatre on Mondays and VIBE (Allerdale Youth Dance Company) meet at Cockermouth Leisure Centre on a Thursday.

These groups are for 13-17 year olds, intermediate level and the groups work on devising and choreographing their own dance pieces. The groups also have access to masterclasses and workshops delivered by professional dance companies, and have the opportunity to perform at various countywide and regional events.

New for 2008 are two adult classes. These are held at The Rosehill Theatre on Mondays 8.00-9.00pm and at Cockermouth Leisure Centre on Thursdays 8.00-9.00pm.

All the classes are £2.00 per session. To find out more about the classes and to book a place please contact Emma Rowbotham on 07792 330250.
