10/1/2008 - Cumbria's GCSE results improve for seventh year running

Pupils in Cumbria have recorded improved GCSE results for the seventh year in succession.

The continued improvement is revealed today (Thursday 10 January) by the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF), which has published finalised GCSE results for schools, the Local Authority and the country as a whole.

The DCSF report shows that:

- 59.1 per cent of pupils received five or more A*-C Levels, an increase of over 1 per cent between 2006 and 2007.

- The proportion of children achieving five or more GCSEs or equivalents including GCSE English and Maths is 45.7 per cent, up 0.5 per cent on the previous year.

- The proportion of children achieving 'any qualification' (formerly known as '1 or more A*-G grades') has also increased by 1per cent between 2006 and 2007.

Boys have increased their performance on both main GCSE measures over the last year by 4 per cent.

The director of Children's Services at Cumbria County Council is Moira Swann. She said:

"GCSE results in Cumbria have improved year on year for the past six years and it is good to hear that 2007 has continued that trend, resulting in the best ever set of results for the county.

"it is also pleasing to see that as a result of concerted effort by schools and the Local Authority, the gap between boys' and girls' achievements has narrowed."

"I would like to congratulate all the students and teachers involved for their extremely hard work - what a great achievement."

Councillor Jim Buchanan is the county council's cabinet member for Children's Wellbeing. he said:

"It is no mean feat to improve year on year and to improve on a previous best, so congratulations and well done to everyone involved.

"These results show that the hard work of pupils, teachers, parents and the council's education support staff continues to pay dividends. We have made great strides over the last few years, which I am sure will continue in the future."
