15/1/2008 - Extra hours and extra days to recycle in South Lakeland

Householders in South Lakeland will soon have more opportunity to recycle everything from beer bottles and fridge freezers to mobile phones and garden waste.

Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for South Lakeland agreed today (Tuesday, January 15) to substantially increase opening hours at the area's four Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

The changes agreed by the local committee - which will see some sites open for extra days each week and all sites open for longer each day - will create an extra 124 hours of HWRC opening time in South Lakeland when they come into force in April.

The changes, which are subject to planning permission from the county council's Development, Control and Regulation Committee, will mean:

- Canal Head in Kendal will be open for an extra two hours a day, seven days a week, from 8am to 6pm instead of from 8am to 4pm - an extra 14 hours a week.

- Guides Lot HWRC at Grange-over-Sands will open on Sundays and Mondays as well as Thursday, Friday and Saturday - and will be open 8am to 6pm instead of closing at 4pm - an extra 26 hours a week.

- Rothay Holme at Ambleside will open between 8am and 6pm seven days a week instead of 8am to 4pm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only - an extra 38 hours a week.

- Morecambe Road at Ulverston will be open 8am to 6pm seven days a week instead of from 10am to 6pm only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - an extra 46 hours.

Ted Walsh, Chairman of South Lakes Local Committee, said:

"These changes will make it easier for people to use the excellent facilities to recycle all sorts of things. HWRCs take everything from electrical appliances, engine oil and timber to everyday things like bottles, paper and garden waste. Extra hours and extra days at HWRCs will mean people in the area have even more opportunity to recycle more and to dispose of difficult things responsibly."

Notes

Recycling and composting performance has improved radically across the county, and particularly in South Lakeland. The amount of waste being generated by Cumbria households has fallen by 18 per cent since April 2007 compared with the same period the year before. This has been helped by a county council waste permit scheme which has substantially reduced the amount of business waste sneaking into the domestic waste stream to be paid for by council taxpayers. On top of that people in the county are now recycling and composting 40 per cent of their domestic waste.
