15/1/2008 - Solid support for Workington roundabout improvements

Limestone is to play a central role in a scheme to improve the appearance of a busy Workington roundabout.

Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Allerdale decided today (15 January) to use a three-metre high block of limestone as the centrepiece to a major redevelopment of Northside roundabout.

Limestone has been because of key role played by the mineral in Workington’s steel industry. The choice of material and the general design of the scheme has been made in consultation with Allerdale Borough Council.

The roundabout is the main gateway into Workington from the North on the A596.The scheme, which will be completed by April, will also include reducing the roundabout’s height and the installation of low-maintenance decorative stone chippings around its base.

A local company, Iss Waterers Landscapes, has offered to provide the stone chippings and carry out any weeding and upkeep required on the site for next nine years. The company already provides maintenance work in the town for Allerdale Borough Council.

Councillor Gerald Humes, Chair of the Allerdale Local Committee, said: "A local Neighbourhood Forum meeting identified the need to improve the visual appearance of Northside roundabout.

"I am pleased that we have been able to develop a scheme that will improve the visual appearance of this important gateway to the town in a way that reflects Workington's proud industrial heritage."
