30/1/2008 - Scrutiny gives verdict on health reforms

Health watchdogs in Cumbria have published their response to Cumbria Primary Care Trust’s ‘Closer to Home’ consultation.

In giving its broad support to the far-reaching health reforms, the Cumbria Health and Well-being Scrutiny Committee has said it wants to be consulted at each key stage of the future changes to make sure replacement services have been sufficiently developed.

During the consultation, members of the Scrutiny Committee, which includes county and district councillors, met health service users, their families, organisations which represent patients’ interests, and other individuals and organisations with a genuine interest in the proposals.

The request for more consultation as the reforms are applied is just one of 29 recommendations councillors have made which Cumbria PCT will be asked to consider.

Councillor Bert Richardson, Chair of Cumbria County Council's Health and Well-being Scrutiny Committee, said: "Members of the scrutiny committee have taken a great deal of evidence in reaching the conclusions set out in this report.

"One of the main recommendations in the report is the opportunity for the committee to evaluate the implementation of the changes at each key stage in order to make sure the reforms proceed safely and effectively."
