3/6/2008 - Firefighters offer free safety advice to Appleby Horse Fair visitors

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service is offering free safety advice to travellers and horse dealers heading for this week’s Appleby Horse Fair.

The annual event attracts thousands of visitors and is one of the most important events on the travellers' calendar.

Firefighters and community safety officers are visiting the campsites of travellers on their way to Appleby.

As well as safety advice, travellers are also being given the opportunity to have smoke detectors fitted in their caravans –a free service already available to every home in Cumbria.

John Smith from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, said: "The Appleby Horse Fair is a major occasion and we want to help people enjoy the event as safely as possible.

"As part of this initiative, we are also providing free crayons and colouring books to younger travellers alongside information on how to stay safe."

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service provides a home safety visit service where people can get free smoke detectors and advice on how to reduce their fire risk. The service is free and can be arranged by calling 0800-358-4777.
