Cumbrian secondary school pupils are set to name their favourite book this week as the sixth annual 'Spellbinding' book award reaches its conclusion.
Around 80 pupils will vote for their favourite writer at 2:00pm tomorrow (18 June), at the University of Cumbria’s Newton Rigg campus.
The event is organised by Cumbria County Council's Library Service for Schools and is being sponsored by the University of Cumbria.
Nominations for this year's competition came from pupils aged 11-14. A list of the top ten books was compiled which pupils were encouraged to read and review in their school reading groups.
A final shortlist of three has been chosen by the pupils. These are: Deeper than Blue by Jill Hucklesby, Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy, and Fearless by Tim Lott.
This year’s page-turning event is being hosted by the poet Mike Garry - described by National Literacy Trust as a motivating and positive role model to young people.
Councillor Gary Strong, cabinet member for Community Development and Safety, said: "It is great to see young people getting exited about reading particularly as this is part of the National Year of Reading in Cumbria."
