National Tackling Drugs Week (19-23 May) is being marked in Cumbria with a series of special events showing what services are available at a local level to help people who misuse drugs in the county.

Throughout the week, Cumbria Drug and Alcohol Services will be holding open days in different venues across Cumbria.

Here, people will be able to get information on the work being done to combat drug use, talk to experts and service users, and pick up a free copy of a new, local directory of drug and alcohol support services in Cumbria.

The guide, which has been produced by the Cumbria Service User Project, is made up of six separate directories –one for each district, provides information on the full range of local local drug treatment and advice services available.

Schools in Cumbria are also being encouraged to get involved during the week through themed assemblies, special classroom displays and other activities.

Jill Stannard is the Director of Adult Social Care and Health at Cumbria County Council, and the Chair of the Cumbria Drug and Alcohol Action Team. She said: "Tackling Drugs Week provides an excellent opportunity to focus on the work being done in Cumbtia at a local level by drug workers, police and communities to deal with drug issues.

"The costs of drug misuse can be very serious for communities and individuals. It can mean missed opportunities, poor health, a possible prison sentence and sometimes even loss of life.

"This week of events, combined with the publication of the new local directory of drug support services in the county, will provide valuable information on the support and advice services available."
