Proposals to transform a former Ulverston health centre into a residential development for learning disabled people with autism are expected to be submitted to planners next week.
Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Primary Care Trust want to develop a centre to house six adults who are all from south Cumbria. A shortage of specialist residential facilities means some are currently living outside the county.
The new service would be funded by Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Primary Care Trust, and developed in partnership with Impact Housing. Care providers Creative Support would provide 24-hour on site care for the home’s six residents.
Impact Housing, who are submitting the building designs to South Lakeland District Council’s planners, will be giving local residents the chance to examine the drawings and discuss the proposals.
Judith Whittam, Cumbria County Council’s manager for learning disabilities, said: "There are currently a number of people with learning disabilities who have to live outside the county.
"This residential facility would enable us to provide 24 hour residential support and enable more people to remain in their community."
