Cumbria County Council will make a landmark commitment to its staff at a formal signing ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday 29th October.)
Chief Executive Peter Stybelski will lead the signing of the Skills Pledge in Committee Room 2, The Old Courts, Carlisle at 1pm.
The Skills Pledge signals a commitment from Cumbria County Council to support the skills development of all its 17,000 employees.
It encourages staff to work towards further qualifications to gain a first Level 2 (equivalent to five good GCSEs.)
Since its launch in 2007 the Skills Pledge has helped thousands of companies ensure their staff are skilled, competent and able to help make a full contribution to the success of their organisastion.
The commitment is supported by Corporate Management Team members, the GMB, Unison and Fire Brigades Union, the Learning and Skills Council, North West Employers Organisation and the council’s Adult Education Service.
Peter Stybelski said he was delighted to be at the forefront of the Skills Pledge commitment :
"This will be a great day for both Cumbria County Council and its staff. We are fully committed to helping our employees develop. Their new found skills will ultimately make our organisation stronger and better suited to achieving our aims."
Louise Doran, an administration officer at Cumbria County Council, said:
"I completed the NVQ Level 3 in Customer Service earlier this year and found it to be beneficial to me in lots of ways. The different units helped me to focus on my job role and recognise my own contribution to customer service. The NVQ is a very relevant qualification and looks great on a CV!"
The Chief Executive and trade unions will also publicly sign the Declaration of Commitment for the GO North West –Local Government Skills for Life Award to work collaboratively together to identify employees with Skills for Life needs. The Adult Education Service will work with the council and trade unions to ensure that Skills for Life and NVQ opportunities are available to all employees.
