23/4/2009 - Get real with Cumbria nappy campaign

Nappies will be on show across Cumbria next week when parents are urged to ditch disposables and get real.

The Cumbria Real Nappy campaign –which this year celebrates its first anniversary –will see a host of roadshows taking place across the county in a bid to encourage parents to see the benefits of real nappies.

And as an extra incentive Resource Cumbria –the organisation that runs the Cumbria Real Nappy scheme –is offering families £30 vouchers for each child (under six months) to help buy what they need to get started with real nappies if they sign up to the scheme.

With around eight million disposable nappies being thrown away every day in the UK, more than two billion nappies need to be disposed of annually –many ending up in landfill.

But it’s not just the environmental cost of disposable nappies that’s high –it’s the financial one too. Estimates indicate every single child uses on average 5,850 disposable nappies in their lifetime and to buy all these would cost well over £1,000.

The roadshows, which are set to include balloons and cakes to mark Cumbria Real Nappy campaign’s first birthday, will feature demonstrations on how to use real nappies and examples of the products available. The Cumbrian campaign has been timed to coincide with national Real Nappy Week.

Cumbria County Council waste prevention officer Louise Woods said: "Real nappies not only save disposable ones being sent to landfill, they save parents money –especially with this £30 voucher for each child.

"These roadshows are a great chance for people to come along and find out about the types of real nappies available and to learn how to use them.

"Last year the Cumbria Real Nappy campaign was a big success and I’m hoping this year even more people will get involved and see the benefits of real nappies."
